I see everyone on the board say " no hot water " only lukewarm. Why? I love hot showers, so I want to understand why I can't have them anymore.
TiredOfThisAll 03-24-2003, 11:59 PM the hot water dries out your skin.
LookingForHealth 03-25-2003, 12:57 AM my esthetician said it will burst capillaries and youll have ugly red swivels in the skin.
as for drying out, are you oily skin? she also told me oily skin does NOT respond when being dried out by producing more oil. she said there is no way on earth skin can do that. no flaming anyone! the worst that would happen is that youd be left with not only oily skin, but the pain of having it feel tight and dry. there are a lot of myths out there.
silently confident 03-25-2003, 12:59 AM im an example of broken capillaries from hit water. its so bad if i take a hot shower my forhead gets red and blothy never mind the broken capillaries.

vonnie 03-25-2003, 01:33 AM Now I know why I look soooo red after getting out. But to answer the question, yes I have very oil skin.
OhMyFace 03-25-2003, 07:44 AM I LOVE hot showers too...usually, I do not get my face wet in the shower, so that the steam will open my pores but I won't abuse my face. Then I wash with cool water. (not cold) It's very refreshing. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif
ME TOO!!
i love hot showers,, but i do notice that my skin gets really red and blotchy when i shower hot..
i remember when i was on vaction back in the days, and that place was soo damn hot, so i just showered cold..
and a month later, my skin was so clear
i think hot water damages the skin or somthing
Jonesy 03-27-2003, 03:20 AM Having tried most of the tricks in the book I am very much against the hot water/steam things. It seems only to make your skin more blotchy and the red bits even redder. Not only that, people says it opens the pores, well thatisn't necessarily a good thing!! If you open your pores right up then you also stand more chance of clogging them up. Don't use really hot water on your face, it is no help whatsoever.
zangiff 03-27-2003, 03:21 PM Sometimes after I have popped a zit i dont get all the puss out...so I wait for a while then I will take a hot shower and it will push all the junk left to a head..and i get it out and it speeds up the healing process....is this a bad thing to do? I only do this maybe once or twice a week...otherwise my showers are just lukewarm-warm.
LookingForHealth 03-27-2003, 05:23 PM pores are not like car doors and windows
OhMyFace 03-27-2003, 05:28 PM I think that if you do too much extracting on your own, you could cause serious scars. You might go and get a facial and have a professional do it for you.
put on polysporin triple formula with added vitamin E
the zit comes to a head by itself and the puss just comes out by itself in a couple of hours
it works really well man
everyone, listen to me, it is really good!!
yesterday i had 4 zits, and in the afternoon 2 of them came to a head and i just wiped it off like it was nothing
and the place didn't even leave a red mark like Benzyl peroxide treatment.
just try it out
i threw out my Benzyl peroxide and benzamycin and stievamycin, those "derm" treatments, because of polysporin.
those derm drugs just kills the skin. it turned mine black or somthing
trainboxer 03-29-2003, 05:52 PM i know my skin gets blotchy and red after my hot showers the past few years, but why did it never do that before i had acne. did it? i dont remember, but hot showers really relieves my stress from the day. i dont know what id do without them. one thing i do have though, not sure from what but it started after my acne i think, is redness (broken capillaries?) around my nose. i dont like it one bit. it might have been from steaming my face cause i let the hot boiling water get too close to my skin. not sure though since this was like a year i started acne. and i didnt have anything red on my face before acne. i dont know.
HalfwayThere 03-29-2003, 07:22 PM I am 49 years old and have been taking extremely hot showers and/or hot baths as well as frequent (sometimes daily) sessions in a sauna, followed by a steam room, and I haven't experienced any of the problems described in previous posts. I don't doubt that hot water can wreak havoc on sensitive skin, so maybe I'm just lucky that my olive/oily skin is not as sensitive as many folks.
It might also have something to do with the the fact that I religiously follow any exposure to hot water with cold water. If I've just had a hot bath or shower or steam room session, after cleansing, I run NOTHING but cold water (yep, even in winter!) for at least 30 seconds, and when I can stand it, a full minute or more. Yes, it feels brutal, but I know it helps to close my pores, plus it makes my hair shinier (I always rinse it in cold water), my skin smoother, and it's stimulating and energizing.
After my facial cleansing routine, which may or may not include a facial steaming, I fill the sink up with cold water and dump two trays of ice cubes in. Then I dunk my whole face in there for as long as I can hold my breath - a minute or two - and I can almost hear my pores slam shut. <g> I've been doing it ever since I was a teenager and read in a magazine that Paul Newman (who was a real hottie for a child of the sixties <g> ) did this every morning, and he looked pretty good to me. I find it helps to keep my pores from clogging, keeps them smaller, and on the rare occasions when I wear makeup, it seems to last longer.
I have to confess that I don't enjoy the actual sensation of having cold water on my skin, but I do enjoy the mental aspect of knowing it will have an "instant gratification" kind of benefit.
Another side note about ice water: I have suffered with narcolepsy all my life and often find myself "nodding off" when I desperately need to stay awake, especially if I have a work-related deadline. During those times, I keep a bowl of water with ice cubes and a wash cloth handy, and when I feel the "nod" coming on, I dip the wash cloth in the cold water and hold it on my face for a few minutes while also doing some stretching exercise or briefly walking in place, and it helps me buy a few more minutes of alertness. Interestingly, the more tired I am, and thus the more often I apply the cold wash cloth, the better my skin looks the next day, in spite of being so tired the day before (provided I eventually get the rest I need)!
